This remarkable Victorian mourning locket is crafted from solid 9ct Gold and inlaid with inky French Jet, a form of polished black glass much prized in the 19th century. The bold circular form is edged with graduated beads, creating a striking silhouette that reflects the light beautifully.

Inscribed to the reverse with “Helena Countess of Kingston, 9 December 1847”, this locket has both historical and sentimental significance. A superb example of Victorian mourning jewellery, it carries a touching personal story and remains in exceptional condition today.

Item Details

ERA: Victorian, c.1820.

MEASUREMENTS: Locket is 34mm long including bale x 25mm diameter.
Jet beads graduate from 1.5mm to 4mm in diameter.
WEIGHT: 6.2g.

MATERIALS: Tests as 9ct Gold, French Jet.

HALLMARKS: Since we have dated this piece as being made before 1950, a hallmark is not required in order for it to be sold in line with UK hallmarking legislation.

PACKAGING: Your order will be gift-wrapped free of charge in a Lillicoco cardboard box made from recycled materials, tied with a ribbon.

Condition

EXCELLENT: The locket is beautifully preserved, with no chips or cracks to the French Jet. The polished Gold surface shows only slight patina consistent with age, and the inscription to the reverse remains clear. A wonderful antique mourning jewel with superb historical provenance.
